Is there a type of skin cancer with this degree of localized effect?

Question:
Almost a month ago, I noticed a small (2mm long, ovoid shaped) patch of hardened skin right beside the nail of my right pinky. It has grown, but is still only about 3mm long. It's slightly discoloured, but doesn't cause pain when touched/rubbed or whatever. It is only raised *slighly* above the surrounding skin. AFAIK, that's the only place on my skin where there's such a growth.

Is anyone willing to comment on what type of problem this is? I'm not too versed in the study of cancer (except for the knowledge that skin cancer is called carcinoma ;) Is there a type of skin cancer with this degree of localized effect? Is this even cancer?

I'm going to see my doctor soon. I was just wondering if anyone has seen this symptom before so I can get a grasp of what I can expect.

Answer:
The location and description make cancer very unlikely. This might be a viral or fungal growth. I believe that you will feel better after a visit to a skin specialist (dermatologist).
