Do tanning beds cause cancer?

Question:
Here's an issued that I'm unfamiliar with. Maybe someone can help me .... Do tanning beds cause cancer? I always thought they were safe. Any thoughts on how to effectively tan safely?

Answer:
I'm a lighting designer so am familiar with various light sources. The reason one's skin tans is to protect one from harmful ultra violet radiation. In order to tan, these beds must admit some amount of UV to get the job done. If one tans for a low number of hours a day and allows the skin to gradually turn colour, there is less, but still some risk.

Persons suceptable to skin cancer may still get it whether from tanning bads or natural sunlight. I personally suggest that everyone stay away from both, if not for Cancer reasons, then for premature aging of the skin problems which are accelerated by UV radition. Remember those old films in geography class? You'd see some east European peasant out in the field that looked 90 years old - well, chances are she was only in her 40's or 50's. Take heed!
