Question:
Jacob has just proven he's allergic to Banana Boat's "baby block" sunblock
lotion, the label of which says "waterproof, SPF 50, hypoallergenic,
titanium dioxide formula, full spectrum UVA UVB protection" and lists the
ingredients as: octocrylene, octyl methoxycinnamate, oxybenzone, octyl
salicylate, and titanium dioxide. Unfortunately he gets a horrible red
itchy rash when I put this on him and yes, I did a patch test to be sure.
So, does anyone have any suggestions? My pediatrician said it's all
hit-or-miss, some kids react to everything and just need to be kept out of
the sun (as if)! She also said I may be more likely to have success with
one of the sunscreens marketed as a non-comedogenic product for use on the
face (which is of course a million times more expensive but whatever). So.
Anyone have any experience with sunscreen allergies and/or facial
sunscreens to recommend?
Answer:
My mum is allergic to one of these agents that happens to be in a
*lot* of products like shampoo, sunscreens, lotions etc. When going
into the sun she applies a basic zink-oxide cream, which is also a
sunblocker, although not as good as the general sunscreen, but better
than none. It is often used in diaper-rash creams, so if your son is
not allergic to those, he should be OK.
I think you are in the US, but in Germany we bought Penaten sunscreen
for babies, which is so far the only one that DS can stand having on
his face. We have only one bottle left, so are very careful with it,
but it lasts a long time. AFAIK Penaten is called Johnson & Johnson
here in the US, but I haven't found a baby sunscreen from them yet.
