Question:
I know that some of the side effects of the meds I"m on causes a sensitivity
to exposure to sunlight.
What are some of the symptoms of this senstivity, and what can i do to reduce these symptoms.
Answer:
I was told that I would burn much quicker in the sun and that I was more
susceptible to skin cancers. I use blockout every day on my face, neck,
ears and hands; and on any other exposed surface. I use blockout with
suspended zinc particles in it as this was recommended by the skin
specialist, rather than the chemical blockouts.
So far (19 years) so good. No cancers, which is great for living in the
country with the highest per capita incidence of skin cancer in the world.
(Australia)
What I have noticed is a great deal of solar keratosis. These are not
dangerous, but disfiguring patches of dry skin, moles and discolourations,
mainly on my upper chest and legs. Apparently due to exposure to the sun as
a young woman or child and exacerbated by my sun sensitivity.
Keep well covered, always look for shade. I always carry and wear a broad
brimmed hat. When I lived in the tropics I always carried an umbrella and
used it like a parasol for transportable shade.
