Question:
I am currently waiting on a biopsy to determine whether or not I have a
melanoma on my breast. This biopsy, of course, has increased my awareness to the possibility of having skin cancer and not knowing it. I have a spot on my lower lip that has never given me trouble (it isn't raised or anything) and I am curious as to whether or not I should have it checked out. I have been noticing that there are a lot of people with "spots" on thier lips and is that normal? Is there a visual difference between a regular discoloration and true skin cancer on the lips?
Answer:
I have had both Melanoma and Basil Cell. There is a form of Melanoma that
does not originate in the dark pigmented cells of a body, but are void of
color. Almost appears as a pink pearl like color. My Aunt had this and her
dermatologist sent it to three different places, when all three came back as
Melanoma he had no choice but to believe it (not sure why, as all the
medical texts mention this type of Melanoma).
When I went to the dermatologist for the Basil Cell, she was positive that
it was nothing. I insisted that it be removed and the rest is history. A
year later I went back to her, as I believe it was back, again, she thought
it was nothing. Needless to say I no longer go to her.
If you are uncomfortable have it removed. You need to be your own Dr. We
also need to remember that Dr's work for us not the other way around!
