WHat might I do if skin cancer has run in my family?

Question:
Wow, I haven't known anyone really close to me, dying of cancer. Never had any serious health issues, just found the spot this week. But cancer does run in the family -though I never paid any attention to it. Something like skin cancer, do they just cut it or burn it off your skin or do you *must* get chemotherapy (other cells in the body) or is it concentrated in the spot it shows up at? My Grandmom had cancerous spots burned off her face (in her late 80's), my Mom had colon cancer, eldest sister had breast cancer, another sister recently had pre-cancerous cells on her face treated, another sister had thyroid cancer --and then this little thing pops up -I have my suspicion . . .yes, because I _never_ had a mole in that spot. I'm not sure how long its even been there. (Winter, wearing pants all the time). I'm still a little in shock.

Answer:
If you don't want to speak to a doctor, then you really need to read good, solid information, like the American Cancer Society's web site: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp
