Question:
I need information about the surgical treatment of malignant melanoma
metastasis.
If anybody can help me, I'd appreciate it
Answer:
The surgical treatment of melanoma consists of two parts:
1. Removal of the primary cancer with a margin of normal tissue. The
size of the margin is debated among physicians. On occaisions, a
"plastic" repair with a skin graft is required.
2. Removal of the regional lymph nodes, particularly if the primary
tumor was large and/or deep.
Neither of these surgical techniques is of value if the cancer has
already spread to the liver, lungs, etc.
