Question:
Last September a small tumor was found behind my retina (left eye)
and, although there was not enough evidence, the diagnosis was a
choroidal melanoma. Later, after I went to two specialists, they
both agreed that it is not possible to give a diagnosis so far and,
after my second visit to the doctor, no growth could be detected.
Anyway, my question is: if, for any reason, I have to change insurance
company, would I have any problem? Although I feel like releasing
the information about my problem (of course, I want my doctor visits
to be paid by the insurance company), should I do that?
Answer:
Of course the answer is, it all depends. My company's policy is that
if you have been treated for something or diagnosed with something
in the 3 months before joining the company, then you will not be covered
for that pre-existing condition for the first 6 months of employment.
(that even goes for pregnancy!)
On the other hand, it seems that even if you did have some fatal disease,
you could just not see the doctors for 3 months and you would be OK.
A more realistic alternative is to investigate the COBRA laws in your
state. These laws allow you to continue using your current insurance
for 18 months after leaving your current job as long as you pay both
your premium and your companies premium.
