Question:
In the current issue of Mother Jones Magazine is
an article about the risks of sunscreen. Apparently,
there have been more cases of melanoma skin cancer
during the recent history of sunscreen than prior to
that time. Sunscreens generally block the UVB rays
that cause sunburn, but not the UVA rays that penetrate
beneath the skin and cause cancer. Sunburn is reported
to be the skin's early warning protection system, effectively
disabled by sunburn-inhibiting commercial sunscreens.
There are some UVA protection sunscreens out there,
but I don't who manufactures them.
Question: Is there an all-natural home-made alternative
to commercial UVA sunscreens?
Answer:
I don't know if this is helpful, but I've found a commercial
23 SPF sun block that claims protection from both UVA and UVB. The
company name is "Fruit of the Earth" and claims to be the official sun
block of the US ski team. It also states "PABA" free. PABA is a common
sunscreen ingredient, but blocks only UVB. I think if you closely
examine the sunscreen offerings in a large drug store, you should find
some that offer UVA and UVB protection
